Losing your pet is not something you expect to happen. According to the American Humane Association, only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats without identification are returned to their owners after they become separated from their families. These numbers can be dramatically increased if your pet has more than one form of identification.
Identification tags. The tags that attach to your pet’s collar are important as they provide quick information about the pet’s owners. The downside to tags is that the information may not be current, the information may rub off over time or your pet’s collar comes off.
Microchip. Give your pet extra protection with a microchip. Microchips are a permanent form of identification that are easily and painlessly inserted under your pet’s skin.
How does the microchip work?
- The microchip is injected under your pet’s skin similar to when your pet receives vaccinations. No anesthesia is necessary for implanting the microchip.
- Each microchip contains a unique number that belongs to your pet only.
- You will need to register your pet’s unique number with a national pet recovery database.
- When your pet becomes lost, shelters and veterinary facilities will scan your pet for a microchip using a universal scanner. The scanner detects your pet’s unique number in the implanted microchip.
- A simple phone call to the national registry begins the process of reuniting you with your pet.
What the microchip does not do:
- Store your personal information. The registry agency keeps this information secure in their databases; the information is not shared with anyone. The registry contacts you directly if your pet becomes lost.
- Microchips are not tracking devices.
- Emit signals/energy. Only the specialized scanner can detect the unique microchip number inside your pet.
At each wellness visit, your pet’s microchip will be checked to ensure that the number matches records. After this visit is an ideal time to contact your registry agency to ensure that your contact information is current and accurate.
Our recommendation is that your pet has two forms of identification: a collar tag and a microchip. Microchip identification is safe and affordable. Keep your pet safe and secure by calling our practice to schedule a time to insert a microchip into your pet.
